Manchester Music Venue Sound Control Confirms Closing Date
Manchester music venue and nightclub Sound Control has confirmed it is to close at the end of the year.
The New Wakefield Street venue will shut on December 16, eight years to the day since it opened in a former music shop of the same name in 2009.
Plans were revealed earlier this year to demolish the building to make way for a new tower of student flats on the site, which is just off Oxford Road and close to the city's two universities.
Sound Control's management said at the time that it would not be the end for the venue, and they would be looking for a bigger, better site to relocate to.
Confirming the closure on Twitter last night, events manager Ben Taylor reiterated that message.
He wrote: "You've probably seen the news, Sound Control is set to be demolished at the end of the year to make way for student accommodation. Looking back over the past 8 years has been mad, fuck me we had some good nights."
Bands who have played there over the years include The 1975, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Blossoms, Friendly Fires, The Whip, Two Door Cinema Club, Scissor Sisters, Wu-Tang Clan, Skepta, Tame Impala, London Grammar, The Slow Readers Club and countless more.
Ben added: "The hugest of thanks to everyone that have worked, played supported, danced, drank, sang with us. Made some amazing friends for life. 8 years, to the day we opened, our last chance to dance will be Saturday December 16th. Hope you can all pop in at least once for a booze. The next Sound Control chapter is just around the corner."
The last party will be an Oasis Disco with wall-to-wall classics from the band, Liam Gallagher, Beady Eye and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds from 11pm to 1am, opening up into other Britpop and Madchester bands acts like The Stone Roses, Charlatans, Ocean Colour Scene and The Verve until 3am.
Tickets are on sale now priced at £8 plus booking fees from soundcontrolmanchester.co.uk
