Family Jools - 'Ain’t No Place For You' Single Review

The new single from Family Jools is very atmospheric, with a stylish video, and a seventies’ vibe.

It feels like it could have been written any time in the last 50 years but it’s very much of that early 70’s blues/rock vibe, there is definitely more than a hint of Hammond organ in there and a very melodic baseline.

There are hints of The Band, the more chilled end of Led Zepplin and even a touch of a country vibe but there is also a bit of a southern rock influence in there in the styling and the feeling someone is about to get run out of town.

There is a menace to the lyrics, clearly the title is not a welcoming title. For me this is written about someone who has done something bad to the singer but has shown up again, possibly seeking redemption. That redemption will clearly not be forthcoming. If there is a film director looking for a song for the pre-climax of a thriller look no further, you’ve found it.

I loved the vibe, the guitar work, the Hammond, the vocals, it’s a change of pace from what I’ve been listening to recently and I really enjoyed it.

I don’t know anything about the band, the single was recommended to me by the videos director, and I get why, I suspect this one will be even better live. Are they touring? I don’t know but having heard this I want to hear more! I can see this being brilliant in an intimate venue but also some day in a stadium being belted out by thousands of voices. Is there an album to back this? Again, I don’t know but I’m going to go and investigate. If it’s not out yet, then could we get to review it please?

There feels like there may be a bit of a rock revival going on, if bands like Family Jools can produce something this intense, this atmospheric and this lush then I’m all for it.

Go listen, go buy, go watch on YouTube, if you love rock with a 70’s twist but a timeless feel I think you might just find a new band to get obsessed about.
