This was my first time at Sneaky Pete’s which has previously been praised as a great live music venue, I was intrigued as to how good it would be, I really wasn’t disappointed. It’s a great venue and a credit to Edinburgh’s music scene and the kind of venue we should all be supporting.
The support act were an old school rock and roll act, almost rockabilly. I didn’t quite catch their name but I think they said it was Wild Devils, they were excellent, the singer has a great voice, the rhythm section were tight and the guitarist drove the songs forward in a tremendous way, they are very talented musicians. Given the bands are on a bit earlier at this venue it must be a tough call to get up that early and go for it but it didn’t phase this band, they were a joy and, I suspect with a different audience, some spontaneous dancing would have broken out.
Wild Devils got the crowd well warmed up for the main event, Jenny Don’t And The Spurs, straight out of Oregon with a mission to reclaim country and western and take it back to it’s roots. As well as being an excellent country and western band they also bring an almost punk ethos to their songs and stage presence, there were times when it felt like they were rocking out times when they took the energy way down and and times when they blew everyone’s socks off.
I didn’t honestly know what to expect from this gig before I went as I deliberately hadn’t listened the band and wanted to go in with an absolutely open mind but what I got was one of the best live acts I will see this year.
Jenny and the band were milling about the venue before the gig started taking to anyone who was up for a chat and selling merchandise but the second they took the stage at just after 8.30 they turned into a country powerhouse who are clearly hugely talented, Jenny has a tremendous voice, her husband on bass, as well as stealing some of her beer, also threw some shapes that wouldn’t have been out of place at a foo fighters gig while driving the songs forward along with the drummer in one of the tightest rhythm sections I’ve heard in a long time, add in a consummate steel guitar player and Jenny herself on vocals and guitar and it doesn’t get much better than this.
Alternating between old school country and western that wouldn’t be out of place in any bar in the Midwest, the almost punky songs, the ballads and the songs I cant categorise this is a very talented band who are well worth seeing live.
They are touring the UK right now with a number of shows still to go and tickets still available, if you want to go to a gig that will make you dance, make you clap along, make you smile and having you leaving the venue happier than when you went in look no further, go see Jenny Don’t And The Spurs. Don’t hesitate, don’t delay as word will soon get around about just how good they are!
