Lacuna – 'Shelley' Single Review
The new single from Scottish based band, Lacuna, is out next month. It’s already been getting some airplay on BBC Introducing in Scotland which should hopefully start to get the band some wider interest.
Lacuna have been gigging quite extensively over the last year or so and have clearly been honing their sound. They describe themselves as Folk-Rock and it sums them up perfectly.
It starts off in quiet mode, almost reminiscent of First Aid Kit, with some lovely harmonising, then, just as you think it’s a soothing, almost folky song they suddenly switch it up, it becomes a full on indie rock dance along or bounce about dependent on your preference song. The band have often used it to close their set, and I get why, when it goes upbeat it’s perfect for an audience losing it. However, they then switch it back again, slowing it down, going back to the harmonies and the soothing sound, but they can’t stop themselves, pretty soon it’s back to a full on let’s get jumping mode.
It's a brilliant song, I have no idea who 'Shelley' is but the song Lacuna have written about her is excellent, at times they make me think of early Altered Images, at times Throwing Muses at times First Aid Kit as I’ve said and at all times they sound uniquely themselves, I don’t know if there is more new music to follow this but I really hope there is. If they stretch to an EP or even an album we’d be keen to review it on this site.
Live the band have already sold out King Tuts and have supported Lucia and the Best Boys, this is a band very much on the rise, get on board before you miss out! This a quality band, great vocals, great musicians and clearly a lot of talent. I suspect you’re going to hear a lot more about them in the coming months, I’d love to know when the next gig is, I feel a live review coming on!
