Permanent (Joy) – 'I Wanna Go Home' Single Review

Rising out of the ashes of Blondes, Permanent (Joy)’s new single is an absolute banger of an indie rock song, personally it transported me back to my 90’s indie heyday when it seemed like indie should take over the world, but I can hear so many other influences in this song.

It’s an indie rock song with a driving rhythm that makes it very danceable and yet the chorus of I wanna go home is very catchy, very singalong like, I don’t know what happened with Blondes, a band I liked, bit if this is the result I can more than live with it.

I can see the being a Jo Wiley obsession quite easily, it has an underpinning of melody, a swagger and yet there is a touch of pathos, of longing, of that need to be somewhere other than you are while all the while there is some excellent guitar work.

A totally different style of vocalist but in terms of its potentially singalong potential they remind me a bit of Biffy, but also Echo and the Bunnymen while having a hint of the Stone Roses yet it’s all very much drawing from a number of other great bands while creating something all their own. It does remind me of something but what just won’t come to me, which is a great sign that they are creating something a bit different, just theirs, which everyone should be happy about when it’s this good.

The band are going to support Inhaler, I think they will be awesome, make sure you get down there in time to see their set. They are also due to support Blossoms. I think big things are coming for this band. We will be reviewing their new EP soon, I can’t wait to listen to it, I suspect a new indie sensation is just getting started.
